Mission

IEETA is a research unit dedicated to advancing innovation in Informatics, Electronics, Engineering and Computer Science. Empowered by its internal diversity and strong collaborative environment, IEETA has provided important contributions to problems requiring a high level of multidisciplinarity.

Our mission is to develop internationally competitive R&D activities and serve as an effective interface between the university and the society, including the industry and the public administration. We aim to advance intelligent systems for Human Assistance, designed to tackle complex societal challenges such as aging populations and environmental changes. These issues drive our research in monitoring, surveillance and assistance technologies, contributing to both industry and society through a path of excellence and innovation.

Some of our history

IEETA has a rich history of innovation and scientific contributions, with roots going back to 1985. It initially started with the TIAAS research group (acronym for “Tecnologias da Informação Aplicadas à Area da Saúde”) which focused on developing information technologies for healthcare and contributed significantly to advancements in medical informatics and telemedicine. A key milestone in 1990 was the first telemedicine experiment in Portugal which transmitted EEG signals from Hospital Geral de Santo António to the Hospital of Vila Real via the public telephone network. In 1994, a major landmark was reached with the inauguration of the INESC Aveiro building, reflecting the institute’s growing ambitions. In the same year, the research unit was officially recognized by the FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia as UI 127/94, establishing its reputation within the scientific community. In 1999, the institute was rebranded as IEETA and started a new era of growth and exploration in Electronics, Informatics and multidisciplinary research.
